Soccer Fiesta Raises Money and Awareness for Darfur
On June 16th students, business leaders and community members gathered at LangleyForksPark in McLean, Virginia to play a game of 3 x 3 soccer and pledge funds to support GOAL USA’s work for the victims of genocide in Darfur.
When Charlie Perla, a longtime McLean resident, discovered many kids were not aware of the ongoing atrocities in Darfur, he contacted GOAL’s US representative, Angela Dean, who provided enough brochures and t-shirts for Perla to organize “Futsal Fundraising Fiesta.”

Ten teams, including Brazilian Steakhouse Chima, came out to play and pledge to the sounds of Brazilian music playing over the fields. The community event succeeded with approximately $1,000 pledged in two hours.
“It was fantastic to see these guys playing very hard in order to pledge,” said Perla. “In their own way they were trying to do something beyond sending a check.”
