SUPPORT GOAL’S TOUR DE FRANCE TEAM AND
HELP GOAL SCORE AGAINST POVERTY

On July 10, 2006, a team of GOAL volunteers will raise
funds to support health care initiatives in poverty stricken Sierra
Leone by riding in the 14th edition of l’Etape du Tour, the
world’s largest amateur cycling event. L’Etape is no
ordinary bike ride. Over 8,500 cyclists will set out to ride
an actual stage of the Tour de France, on a day that the pro riders
take a break. The 2006 edition is a 117 mile stage between
the Alpine towns of Gap and l’Alpe d’Huez, which will
take the riders over the classic climbs of the Izoard, Lautaret
and will end with a very difficult, twisting 9-mile climb to the
famous ski resort of l’Alpe d’Huez. It is among
the most difficult stages of the 2006 Tour de France.
The needed projects in Sierra Leone that Team GOAL
seek to fund include the purchase of 100 bicycles and medical supply
kits for health care workers, the purchase of a water pump and jackhammer
used for well construction to provide access to clean water in rural
areas, and the purchase of 120 footballs for beneficiary communities
to encourage team work through sport. GOAL’s Tour de
France team, which includes Con Egan, Russell Hanlon, Bruce Hart,
Hans Humes, Story Maley, Conor O’Driscoll, and Fran Rodilosso,
hope to raise $20,000 for this effort.
Stephen Roche, winner of the 1987 Tour de France and
ardent GOAL Patron, had this to say about this year’s l’Etape
course: “… this year is the hardest run ever
for the L’ Etape.” He then offered some words
of wisdom for the GOAL Team; “They will have to train
hard not only for speed but also for endurance. They have a difficult
challenge as not only do they have the hardest run but they also
have to deal with the altitude and the heat of July”
Both he and Sean “King” Kelly, GOAL Patron, 7-time winner
of the Paris-Nice race and one of the all-time great cyclists, are
hoping to attend the race and the team’s after party.
