Letter to the Editor, The Corkman, 31st May 2007
Sir
The decision by members of the Irish Nurses' Organisation (INO) to vote in favour of settlement proposals will allow these noble individuals get back to what they do best: caring for and giving dignity to the country's sick and vulnerable. These loving people have been the backbone of aid agencies like GOAL, improving the health status of conflict-ravaged people in the developing world. They have been pivotal in GOAL providing extensive primary health care services to the most vulnerable who would otherwise have minimal access to medical facilities in logistically difficult environments.
Active in 12 countries in the developing world, GOAL is at the coalface of development, witnessing first hand, how extraordinarily lacking health services can be when governments are unable — or unwilling, as is too often the case — to provide them.
GOAL is calling on health professionals in Cork to transfer their technical and employment skills and personality to an arena where the difference can mean life and death. We are hosting a recruitment information evening on Thursday, June 7th in the Cork Vision Centre to enable health professionals to learn more about GOAL'S work in the developing world and crucially, how they can get involved.
As well as health professionals, GOAL is especially keen to hear from engineers, accountants, project managers, logisticians and those with previous overseas development experience.
Dedicated to the alleviation of the suffering of the poorest of the poor in the developing world, GOAL staff members will be available on the evening to answer questions.
GOAL is proud to have kept administration costs at less than 5 per cent since its inception 30 years ago.
Sincerely
John O'Shea
