From getting together to sing Christmas carols on the street to donating money to a good cause instead of sending corporate Christmas cards, there are ways that employers and employees alike can give to charity this year. However, professionals with specific skillsets who are looking for a different way to give this Christmas may find international aid agency’s GOAL’s drop-in information day on Saturday of interest.
“While people are often interested in aid work, they usually don’t see how their skills can be of use,” O’Shea says. “This is a great opportunity for people to hear about what overseas work actually entails, and to ask questions about our experiences in different developing countries.”
Implementing emergency, rehabilitation and development programmes in 13 countries in Africa, Asia and Central America, GOAL is always looking for qualified, experienced people to join the team.
GOAL staff members on the day will answer questions on the day, and the organisation is especially keen to hear from doctors, nurses, nutritionists, engineers, accountants, project managers, logisticians and those with previous overseas development experience.
The organisation has a wide range of opportunities, and anyone who is interested in working overseas is welcome to attend to learn more about the sector.
Targeting the poorest of the poor and people suffering the effects of war and natural disaster, GOAL currently employs 130 GOALies who, alongside over 2,500 locally based staff, implement a variety of humanitarian programmes.
The information day takes place at thew Holiday Inn, 107 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 between 10.30am and 4pm this Saturday, 2 December. Please indicate attendance by emailing zelie@goal.ie. For more information on GOAL, visit their website on www.goal.ie
