Letter from John O'Shea to Sunday Business Post, 12th March
2006
Sir,
The announcement earlier this week by World Bank President
Paul Wolfowitz that he intends to place at the top of his priority
list, the ending of government graft in the Third World, is a hugely
significant development.
If the World Bank - the biggest donor to the poor nations follows
through on its threat to cut off aid to corrupt regimes, it could
force a plethora of dictators, despots and tyrants to clean up their
act.
This is the first indication in history that a leading institutional
donor has shown the courage to grapple with endemic corruption –
the single biggest obstacle to the delivery of aid to the poor.
Wolfowitz deserves the support of all, especially of the Irish Government,
who continue to channel massive millions through governments with
appalling records of human rights and corruption.
Yours etc,
John O’Shea
