AID organisation GOAL is distributing emergency items for an estimated 17,000 people, who are affected by the severe flooding in the Kassala region of northern Sudan. About 21,000 people in all have been hit by the floods. GOAL is hastily working to get plastic sheeting for shelter and other household items to the remainder of those worst affected.
Access is very difficult due to the flooding and the level of the Gash River is at a similar level already to that of 2003, when the last major flooding caused major damage and death. Much more rainfall will cause more significant damage, particularly in the town of Kassala. GOAL has ordered tents for the affected
populations and funding has been sought for mosquito nets and more plastic sheeting, of which supplies are running out. Donations from Kilkenny people would be much appreciated.
