GOAL has called on the Government to use its influence with the Ethiopian regime, to persuade it to withdraw it military forces from war-torn Somalia.
John O’Shea, GOAL CEO said today that the Irish Government maintained it had clout with their Ethiopian counterparts as a result of its large aid grants to the African nation.
“If this is so, then let us use that clout to save lives.
“Over 1,000 people have been killed since the Ethiopian military invaded Somali soil. They have no right to be there, but it seems no one from the international community seems remotely concerned about this shocking tragedy.”
Ethiopia is the largest recipient of Irish aid – despite the fact that the Irish Government does not believe it is entitled to an Irish ambassador.
