Letter to the Editor, Irish Times, 10th July 2006
Madam,
It is highly unlikely that the Irish Government will take any heed
of the recent decision by the UK minister for international development,
Hilary Benn, to slice €30 million off the Uganda government's
aid package.
Mr Benn says he is concerned at serious governance issues which
have again arisen in this east African dictatorship. It is not the
first time the British government has slapped Museveni's government
on the wrist.
But all this seems of little relevance to the Irish Government.
The Department of Foreign Affairs will continue to channel taxpayers'
cash (€33 million of it) through Museveni's corrupt regime.
Can anything, I often wonder, be done to bring a halt to this madness?
I used to believe the lives of the most vulnerable and poorest really
meant something to the Irish Government.
Yours, etc,
JOHN O'SHEA
