June 2005
GOAL has been awarded the UNESCO King Sejong International
Literacy Prize for 2005 in recognition of its informal female
education programme in Khartoum Sudan.
GOAL have been implementing relief, rehabilitation
and development programmes in Sudan since 1985 and started this
education programme in Khartoum in November 2000. The programme,
using a literacy model known as “REFLECT”, (Regenerated
Freirean Literacy through Empowering Community Techniques)
has to date provided numeracy and literacy skills to over 2,500
women in the Sudan capital , (including 50 women who are inmates
in Khartoum’s female prison). In order to achieve this, GOAL
has trained almost 150 literacy facilitators who impart literacy
and numeracy skills to the beneficiaries.
The overall objective of this programme is to assist
in the eradication of illiteracy amongst displaced women, through
the establishment of an appropriate, learner-centred and genuinely
participative literacy technique. Ultimately it is hoped that this
will allow women greater participation in their communities and
empower them to improve their own lives and the lives of their families.
This proven approach allows women to gain literacy
skills while also learning about topics that affect their health
and welfare, their ability to influence decisions in their communities
and families, and to learn other skills that the women themselves
request.
GOAL's programme has gained significant credibility
among government institutions and other national and international
humanitarian organizations in Sudan. We would like to take this
opportunity to thank all of those involved who have made this programme
a success including GOAL staff who work on the project; the education
ministry in Sudan, the donor community who have supported this programme
financially and most of all the women who have participated in this
REFLECT programme for their commitment, enthusiasm and sheer determination
to succeed.
